Paper delivered at the AAB Conference in London – September 2010
The need to increase food production for a growing global population is challenged by a worldwide contraction in arable land for food production and a documented decline in agricultural productivity, especially in the least developed countries which are subject to the yet, uncertain effects of climate change. A radical rethink is required about how we protect and sustain the natural resources on which human development depends. There is an urgent need for more targeted action, especially across the supply chain, which by necessity must manage more effectively, the links between environmental functions and ecosystems services, food production and water conservation, efficient marketing and distribution but most importantly the people who enable all these systems to function. The future will require a compact between people and their environment if we are to achieve a sustainable future. Landcare offers some exciting opportunities and some success stories.
